Alice Jane and William Clayson Central Hotel and ‘Wykehurst’.

On 15th August 1893 my great Aunt, Alice Jane Knight (Ellis, Ongly) married William Clayson at South Malling Church, Lewes. She was 21 and he 23, described as a grocer. Family tradition has it he worked for the Maypole.

William Clayson was the son of Isaac and Letitia Clayson (nee Tucker) and was born at Elham (pron. eel-am), Kent on the 16th February 1870. Family tradition and a photograph of Elham manor signed by A J Clayson ‘where my hubby was born’, suggests that he was born at the Manor House, Elham. (Photo in the gallery)

In 1851 William’s father Isaac, age 12, was living with his father, also Isaac aged 40, at 5 The row, Elham. This elder Isaaac was baptised at Elham on 1st July 1810 to Isaac and Dinah, and died in 1895.

In 1871 William was living, age 1, at Back street, Elham with his father, Isaac age 32, mother Letitia aged 26, and brother Edward age 2, also born at Elham.

William’s parents, Isaac Clayson and Letitia Tucker were married in the March quarter 1868 and in the June quarter of 1868 Edward was born. In the March quarter of 1880 Isaac died and in 1881(census) Letitia, Edward and William were living at 9 Union Road, Bridge. Letitia is described as an annuitant born Middlesex. Also in the household is Clara Tucker, her sister born at Bridge, Kent.

At 5 Union Road is Zebulon and Susannah Vinson, and on 22nd June 1881 Letitia married their son, William Vinson, at Bridge. Clara Tucker was a witness.

By January 1904 Alice Jane and William Clayson, were living at 23 York Road, Canterbury and by September 1907 at ‘Oamuru’, 57 Boyne Road, Lewisham. A receipt for £40, being 5% of the purchase price from Emily Howell, of the Central Hotel, is dated 10th June 1908 and adressed to ‘Oamuru’ and on 21st July 1908 a postcard to the Central Hotel indicates the Claysons had taken over.

The Central Hotel was situated at 62 – 64 Week Street, Maidstone. A 1907 photograph published in the South Eastern Gazette sometime in the mid 1950,s describes the premises as Maidstone Coffee House and next door the Central Commercial and Temperance Hotel.

A letter published in response to the photograph suggests that ‘drinks could be supplied if ordered beforehand’!

By September 1928 the couple had moved to ‘Wykehurst’, Ashford Road, Bearsted but in a letter to the Editor, South Eastern Gazette from William Clayson’ s nephew ‘Fred’ Clayson, William Clayson remained the owner until 1934. ‘Fred’ also in the same letter states he joined his uncle in 1914 and was the manager for the last 10 years. Family tradition suggests he had more of an eye for the chambermaids than the business!

Postcript. I have a copy of the Elham parish magazine for October 1942. Marked for Mr Clayson’s attention is the death of Louisa Pringle BOURNE, model for one of the figures in the light window on th south side of the chancel. As Louisa CULLEN she married Thomas BOURNE in 1876. Is there a family connection?

  1. NELLIE5CLAYSON (JOSEPH4, ISAAC3, ISAAC2, MARK1) was born 03 Aug 1882 in Elham, Kent, and died 1962 in Elham, Kent. She married THOMAS JOHN ASHCROFT, son of THOMAS ASHCROFT and ROSE LUKEHURST. He was born 05 May 1879 in 7 Chapel Lane, Guston Dover, Kent, England, and died 1939 in 12 Cheriton High Street, England.

Notes for THOMAS JOHN ASHCROFT:

Folkestone, Hythe & District Herald Saturday 22nd July, 1939 page 2 Cheriton Tradesman Killed Car overturns in road he might have been blinded by the sun. Inquest verdict of accidental death. Mr Thomas ASHCROFT, aged 61, a well known cycle dealer, of 12, Cheriton High Street, was killed almost instantly on Saturday evening when his car overturned in Cherry Garden Lane and he was thrown out onto the road. He was alone in the car at the time. Several people went to his assistance but could do nothing for him. He sustained a fractured skull when his head struck the curbing. At the Inquest at the Town Hall on Monday, conducted by Mr Lloyd BUNCE, (deputizing for Mr J E CHAPPLE), a suggestion was made that the glare of the sun might have caused Mr ASHCROFT to lose control of his car. Leslie Thomas ASHCROFT, an architectural assistant, son of the deceased, said the previous Saturday afternoon he saw his father, who appeared to be in good health. He himself drove the car in which his father met his death and found it to be quite normal. Lewis Cyril Warden TURNER, 87 Surrenden Road, Folkestone, a 14 year old pupil at the Harvey Grammer School said that at 7pm on Saturday he was at the Morehall Recreation Ground, looking towards the water works. He saw a small car just past the turning into Cherry Garden Lane from Water works Hill; it was travelling at a moderate speed, and on its correct side of the road. When it got near the entrance to the Recreation Ground it started to wobble a bit as though it was unsteady. Then it swerved into the middle of the road and overturned. As it did so, a man came crashing out of the near side window and hit up against the curb. The car finished up in the middle of the road about 20 feet away from the driver. He went to the scene and recognized the man as Mr ASHCROFT. There was no other traffic on the road. In reply to a question by a juryman witness said that the sun was shining brilliantly at the time. Charles BEDFORD, 19 Philip Road, Cheriton, retired, said that on Saturday he was standing talking to some friends in Cherry Garden Lane near the entrance of the Recreation Ground, and facing the water works. He heard a crash behind him, immediately turned round and saw a small car skidding towards the Center of the road. It was coming from its near side. He saw a man thrown completely through the window, head first, like a shot out of a gun, and strike the edge of the curb. The car was turned over on its near side, with the engine still running. He hurried across to see the man, and found him to be bleeding from the ears, with his head terribly injured. He was not conscious. PC NICHOLLS said that he was called to the scene of the accident shortly before 8 pm. When he arrived there were a number of witnesses but the body had been removed and the car was righted and stood in the near side curb. He found a mark on the near side curb near the entrance to Morehall Recreation Ground, where a car wheel had hit the curbing. There was a skid mark close to the curb of 26 feet in length, leading to another mark on the curbing where the wheel had hit again. The skid then carried on in a circular movement to the Center of the road, the whole distance being 83 feet. The road width was 40-45 feet. Near the second mark where the wheel had hit the curb he found a quantity of plate glass, suggesting that the near side window had been forcibly broken and the glass thrown out. A little further ahead there was a pool of blood on the curbing; the distance from the skid mark to the blood was 10 feet. Witness examined car and found that the front brake was of no use at all, being broken. The foot brake was in good order, and the car was damaged on the near side only, the near side wheel being bent under it. Dr James Ferguson DUNN, 3 Ashley Avenue, Cheriton, said he was taken to the scene of the accident, having been informed of it shortly after 7pm. The deceased was dead when he arrived; he was bleeding from the ears and badly bruised about the face. There was no doubt that death was due to a fracture of the base of the skull. The Coroner: From your examination of the deceased did you see anything which might have caused the accident? – No. Addressing the jury the Coroner said there was no evidence to show why the deceased lost control of the car. It might have been that he had been blinded by the sun. Who could say? He thought the only reasonable verdict they could bring in was one of “Accidental Death”. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The foreman added ” We all know Mr ASHCROFT, and we express our deepest sympathy with the family”. The Coroner associated himself with the expression of sympathy. Mr ASHCROFT had an interesting career in the engineering trade. He was born in Dover 61 years ago, and during his life he had travelled extensively in the course of his duties. For many years he was employed by Messrs. TICE of Canterbury and under their instructions he left his native town and went to Canada in 1908, to carry out work in connection with hot water engineering. In Montreal he carried out work in the Ottawa Bank and the Victoria Hospital. He returned home, but a few years later, in 1912, he left with his wife and daughter to represent his firm in Australia. His work there was curtailed by the outbreak of war and in 1916 he came back to offer his assistance in a VICKERS factory, where he worked until the end of the war. In the following year Mr ASHCROFT moved to Whitstable, and there he remained in business as a cycle agent until 1926 when he bought a similar business in Cheriton. This business he carried on until his death. During his last 12 years in Cheriton he became one of the most popular residents. His brisk and happy manner endeared him to all, and his death came as a great shock to the community as a whole. He was an ARP Warden and a keen member of the Conservative Party. He is survived by one son and one daughter. It is understood that the business in Cheriton will be carried on by the family. The Funeral The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, a short service in St Andrew’s Methodist Church preceding the internment in St Martin’s Churchyard, Cheriton. The Rev. H. CHARLESTON officiated both in the church and at the grave side.
