                THOMAS became a boatman, eventually owning his own lugger and becoming one of the outstanding seamen on the east Kent coast.  The Deal  

                Boatmen have a history both as smugglers and as lifesavers.  The Deal Boatmen also saved many lives when ships ran aground on the Goodwin Sands.

                There was no lifeboat at Deal until 1865. THOMAS served in the Crimean War (1854-6).  ELIZABETH ANN MAY came to Deal from the Isle of Thanet,

                on the north-east tip of Kent.  She was the daughter of WILLIAM and ANN MAY.
